Paul Barnes' Priorities

ESSENTIAL BACKGROUND
  • Do you accept climate science?  That our prodigious burning of finite fossil fuels is essential to every aspect of our lives (even to get our drinking water) and is affecting the chemical composition of the atmosphere to threaten the planet's life support systems?
  • Do you accept that, therefore, we need to curtail our burning of fossil fuels out of sheer self-interest?
  • That the best way to do that is to spend in the short-term to cut our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the medium to long term?
  • Therefore, do you accept that unnecessary demolition and rebuilding must be avoided?
  • That we must build now to minimise the use of finite fossil fuels in that building?
  • That retrofit (insulation) must be the top priority for homes and then other buildings?
  • That the homes of the lowest incomes, to get them up to standard, must have top priority?
GETTING DOWN TO IT
  1. Do you accept that how we spend our money affects how much GHG emissions are pumped out?
  2. That spending billions in price and in weight of GHG emissions on a new region-wide transport system of Metro trams and Sprint buses must have a lower priority than giving healthy, safe and low GHG emitting homes to the lowest incomes that must have top priority?
  3. That the 22,000 sq m of designated housing land at High Plateau, Merry Hill Shopping Centre must have 1/2 bedroom apartments that are low cost, highly energy efficient and solar powered for low-income people?
  4. That Metro trams must be kept off this land that will also save nature in one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world?
