A Russian view from Dima Vorobiev

The Self-Righteousness of America and the West, rejoicing in their Rule

FROM:-  https://www.quora.com/

The last Soviet ruler Gorbachev made several decision that led to the demise of the Soviet Union. It was one of the most improbable events of the 20th century—and in the words of President Putin, its “largest geopolitical catastrophe”.

Repent, you fool

For all that, Gorbachev must live with the chip of epic loser on his shoulder and be the butt of undying hate from millions of our compatriots. He seems to cultivate his personal brand as an idealistic soul that keeps struggling for a better world. This way he allegedly continues his quest for peace he started in the 1980s when he embraced the West and together with the Americans took several steps to disarmament.

Showdown time

I also see another reason for Gorbachev preaching for nuclear disarmament.

The ongoing confrontation of Putin with the West and relentless anti-Americanism in our media makes many come with ominous warnings about a looming catastrophe as a way of supporting our President. This narrative is all too familiar to us from the time of Soviet propaganda: “The Western powers threaten to plunge the world into a nuclear catastrophe — but people of good will who side with the USSR say a firm “no” to these evil plans!

Everything stacked up against us

The main problem of Russia in the 21st century is our increasing marginality. Certainly, nuclear weapons assure to us a place in the very top league of international players. But in the meantime, we struggle to keep ourselves among the top ten of world economies measured by the GDP. In the international science rankings, we are now surpassed by India and South Korea. In conventional warfare, we now even need to think twice before facing off Israel and Turkey, as the Syrian expedition has shown. Only a handful of countries have supported us in our joy of returning Crimea into the fold of Russia. In Central Asia, China’s muscling us out, and we don’t really have a choice but to smile politely to them at the table of the Shanghai Cooperation

Nuclear magical wand

Our family jewel from the Soviet time, the Bomb, seems to be the only thing that keeps us at the top of the international politics. This is why President Putin from time to time needs to tell the world the famous bratvá dictum, “He who hurts us won’t live three days”.

Relevance and respect that nuclear weapons create are paramount. Gorbachev’s repeated “The end is nigh” pronouncements are manifestations of his patriotism. It’s the least we can expect from the man who wrecked the great Communist superpower.

Below, a black-and white copy of the Soviet-era poster “No to the nuclear madness!” A determined crowd of peace-loving activists from many countries march in lockstep against the aggressive plans of the US and their Cold War allies. The banner in Russian carried at the head of the procession marks the central role of our country in this honorable struggle. Two tiny figures of an American politician and a NATO top brass clutching at their nuclear bomb make it plain who exactly are the mad men that the world needs to defeat.
