Dinosaurs faced extinction when a mountain-sized asteroid struck near the Yucatán Peninsula. This changed the earth's chemical composition of the atmosphere.
Humans and all other life forms, I think, face extinction from our fatal fascination, our addiction, indeed with finite fossil fuels. This one-off geological inheritance is fast disappearing as we burn them all up and so change the chemical composition of the atmosphere - to our double detriment.
