Notes to Future Council Scrutiny on 24.11.21

Independent review by LR industry announced on 19.11.21 because

  1. Corporation Streets dug up after only 5 years.

  2. Cracks found in trams in June 2021.

  3. From 13 November, every tram service has been suspended for at least four weeks.

  4. In the 19.11.21 press release from WMCA, Ian Ward said, “I have had serious concerns about Metro construction for some time, so welcome the independent review.”

  5. 8 March 2018 letter from DfT quotes:

BCR is “of national strategic significance”

“Safeguarding a heavy rail corridor across the Round Oak to Bescott route is of value as this is the only corridor which could accept freight traffic displaced by further passenger flows into central Birmingham.”

EXTRACTS from email from TfWM, dated November 2021 (my bold):

“... as part of our agreement we will make passive provision for freight trains to return to that section of track.”

“Without the work we will be undertaking, the section of route procured for WBHE cannot be used by freight trains.”

“Metro construction involves upgrading or replacing several structures to be suitable for freight.”  SELF: Not just several but ALL!

“… acquired Parkhead Viaduct to make it safe before carrying trams or freight trains.”

“For freight some additional work would be carried out if the reinstatement of freight trains was agreed.”
