Since the 90s, Network Rail has said that the Black Country Railway will not be needed for freight "until the 2040s, at the earliest". Hence, tramway and cycle-walkway on this principal, mainline railway (with all crossings for canals, roads, motorways in place for trains) between Brierley Hill and Lichfield!
The green movement, the trade union movement, every politician are all still on board with Andy's £15 billion worth of greenhouse gases to green up transport with 150 miles, 8 lines and 380 tram stops to 2040. They also present it as £750 million every year to 2040 for overground and underground tramways. Andy announced this in January 2020 to launch his campaign for the Mayor election in May (postponed). What looks green is not necessarily green. Green jobs is not necessarily green. Green industrialisation is not necessarily green. High greenhouse impacting trams on roads and railway lines, to give us Andy's much wanted, much vaunted, multi-modal transport, is NOT green!
The more we spend on 'greening up' the more we escalate the runaway greenhouse to runaway to disaster. But there is a greener way to genuinely slow catastrophe!
