Please explain why we wealthy lucky humans, in burning up our one-off geological inheritance of finite fossil fuels, cannot possibly have any detrimental effect on the composition of the earth's atmosphere.

Why must such behaviour be always such a rollicking good idea that we can go on doing it for ever and a day with no unfortunate consequences?
