What the Anglo Saxons did to the Roman roads and buildings over centuries of neglect, we Brits did to the Victorian railway network but with us, quite deliberately, in a matter of decades!
The Dudley to Longbridge railway line was one of seven in Dudley. However, the railway enthusiasts did nothing, I believe, to try and stop the ghastly wipe out! They fought hard to stop the closures that I now think was absolutely necessary but then, when they lost, did not bother to stop their sell-off to any old Tom, Dick or Harriet and thus, their complete obliteration!
Parts of Hadrian's Wall survived 1900 years; the Black Country Railway "of national strategic significance" is in bits and pieces already, in less than 150 years. Destroy one-third of the railway network but build High Scam 2 to compensate!
