CA spending is corrupt, immoral and takes money away from the poorest and THEIR homes

Their money goes goes on prestige, vanity projects to impress and rival other UK cities like Manchester.  The Mayor is desperate for High Scam 2 fast to stop at any stations and for a £15 BILLION (2020 figure), 150 miles and 8 lines of Metro, with 380 tram stops.  Both schemes accelerate the climate crisis, deepen the climate emergency and the shortage of vital resources.

This corrupt scheming takes money away from the greater urgency of draught proofing and insulating the homes of the poorest and giving them a modern electricity grid that can cope with renewables powering their homes, NOT flash, grandiose, grand and totally unnecessary High Scam trains, "bus on rails" trams, Sprint buses - "the bus that thinks it's a tram".  Worse, the richest borough out of the seven gets two heavy rail modes (High Scam 2 fast to stop at any stations, plus regular trains), one light rail (Metro) and two kinds of buses - Sprint and the regular buses.  Truly ridiculous.  Absurd.  Immoral.  OTT!

The biggest single item of WMCA spending is, I believe, on transport.

The biggest single transport development spending must be Metro LR extensions, together with VLR, ULR, and Sprint roll out.  This highly expensive spending is totally unnecessary, accelerates depletion of oil and gas reserves, accelerates GHG emissions and hence the climate crisis to threaten all life on earth.  It diverts attention away from climate justice that demands that the top transport attention must be given to boost bus use.

It has also spoiled two mainline railways now given over to trams and, the surviving urban railway lines are still having to play second fiddle to LR, VLR, ULR and Sprint.  THIS IS ABSURD!!

My standing as an Independent candidate for Mayor, in May, is simply to use it as a platform to get the abandonment of these very wrong priorities, to show the more sensible and life-affirming measures to spend money in the short term to get justice for the poor and much less spending on finite fossil fuels in the medium to long term.

Once again, my £5,000 goes NOT to this wayward, clueless, floundering government but to three international humanitarian charities.

11 June 2022 to Suzanne Jeffery

Dear Suzanne

Immoral for the construction cost - HS2 over £200m/Km
                                                     Crossrail: £190m/Km
                                                     Metro Eastside extension: £133m/Km
Metro Westside was £75m/Km last decade - this decade completed and now blocking bus services - with even worse if they ever put the trams on it!
                                                     2003 M6 Toll greenfield 6 lane motorway: £21m/Km
2015 Borders Railway rebuilt in the Southern Uplands: £7m/Km

Inefficient over spoiling heavy rail services by turning them into light rail tramlines and making for more changes and delays between, now, a third mode of transport, trams.  And, trams of 3 different kinds!
Incompetent in first destroying about 100 Kms of railway lines in the West Midlands and then, starting on the UK's only mothballed/safeguarded, principal mainline railway, "of national strategic significance".  And, in use over half its length but wasted in the middle half of 56 Kms where there are congested roads and the often gridlocked M5 and M6 in the Black Country.
Misguided Manchester Metrolink because it took the funds that, probably, could have upgraded the whole of the creaking, Victorian heavy rail services in northern England, in recent decades.
The misspent youth of today's up-and-coming generations.  Just as well we elders are still around to tell them how to do it!
And, where were/are our campaigning and upright trade unions in all of this, Suzanne?  Nowhere to be seen!  Guiltily silent and colluding with the authorities for 75 years, so far - for the whole of my lifetime, plus 1 year!  Or, did the unions oppose the tram destruction in the 1950s?

Railways neglected in favour of trams reintroduced

Many thanks for this, Donald.  As you wrote, Wolverhampton to NE England via Walsall railway hub instead of Brum is one way of raising the importance of the full 120 Kms Black Country Bypass Brum Railway between Worcester and Derby.

Since the correctness of Beeching sensibly closing loss making railway lines but, the utter stupidity of everyone in the railway industry and every train enthusiast then selling every single one of them for homes, offices and shops, we have been turning our railways into other purposes - turning them into anything but the kitchen sink.  A terrible tragedy that only we brilliant Brexit Brits could possibly contemplate and then achieve.

Manchester led the way by neglecting (as W Mids did) their northern railway network and, instead, from the 1980s, used their many hundreds of millions of pounds for turning roads into railway tracks for trams and many of their vital railways into tram lines.  Others, for freight only when our descendants used them for passenger and freight trains.  After decades of this weird and wonderful priority, they now want to modernise their much left behind railways in northern England with HS(too fast to stop)2.  Another climate escalating calamity to worsen our already bleak prospects.  Hopeless!

Best wishes

Tim

Hello Tim,

Thanks for this. I won't add a lot as what you write is essentially correct. Network Rail identified this route many years ago as a potential freight corridor and I have had assurances from them the the bridge replacement work is being carried out to heavy rail standards in order to future-proof the line for these developments. The view that the route is only a "potential light rail corridor" is parochial and does not look at the bigger picture. Birmingham New Street station is running at capacity and cannot cope with any more NE/SW traffic. The Camp Hill line is being developed for passnger use so this route will also be severely constrained for future freight use.

This route has also been identified by Railfuture for future development as a freight route.

I would also add the with the imminent re-opening of rail services between Wolverhampton and Walsall that there is now an improved potential for direct links between Wolverhampton and NE England, by-passing Birmingham and giving considerable time savings.

I would say as a general rule that trams should run on strets and be complimentary torail services on the exisiting heavy rail routes. This has been continental practice for many years but, of course, we never look to see what other countries are doing. We could learn so much - HS2 included!

    Best wishes,

    Donald

ALL THE GLISTERS GREEN IS NOT GREEN!

Turning the Camp Hill line into Metro was abandoned last decade.  For many years that was what Centro wanted.

For 40 years, Centro has always wanted to empire build with their very own railway network, Metro to rival Manchester.  See
Since the 90s, Network Rail has said that the Black Country Railway will not be needed for freight "until the 2040s, at the earliest".  Hence, tramway and cycle-walkway on this principal, mainline railway (with all crossings for canals, roads, motorways in place for trains) between Brierley Hill and Lichfield!
The green movement, the trade union movement, every politician are all still on board with Andy's £15 billion worth of greenhouse gases to green up transport with 150 miles, 8 lines and 380 tram stops to 2040.  They also present it as £750 million every year to 2040 for overground and underground tramways.  Andy announced this in January 2020 to launch his campaign for the Mayor election in May (postponed).  What looks green is not necessarily green.  Green jobs is not necessarily green.  Green industrialisation is not necessarily green.  High greenhouse impacting trams on roads and railway lines, to give us Andy's much wanted, much vaunted, multi-modal transport, is NOT green!

The more we spend on 'greening up' the more we escalate the runaway greenhouse to runaway to disaster.  But there is a greener way to genuinely slow catastrophe!

It's official. It's magic. If it sounds too good to be true ...

HS1 was £54 m/Km when it opened in 2007.

HS2 is, so far, £191 m/Km over its full 555 Kms, at £106 billion.

Quite some difference!  Nearly 4 times more expensive per Km to construct today than HS1, when it opened 14 years ago.

This, below, is from the official HS2 website and my correction/rebuttal is in glorious bold blue!  My research shows that HMG/HS2 and its promoters are exaggerating so seriously with their misleading spin that they are lying.  READ ON as to why I say that and tell me what you think, please.  Am I wrong/mistaken?   Tim

How HS2 creates more rail capacity

As a brand new railway line, HS2 is the best option for taking the pressure off the existing network. It takes the pressure off the existing intercity lines by flying past all the stations travellers on the intercity trains want to stop at.  It adds extra capacity where it is needed most. To benefit London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, ONLY.  Building HS2 frees up a massive amount of space on the existing railway by placing long distance services on their own pair of tracks. But you still have to have the same level of service for those same long distance services.  Nothing is gained!  Once HS2 is operating, services can run much closer together, meaning there can be more rush hour trains, helping to relieve overcrowding.  Only if the existing intercity trains are slowed.  And that gives the intercity stations a worst service.

Once the full network is operational we expect HS2 trains to carry over 300,000 passengers a day. HS1 to Europe has 6,000 passengers a day.  HS2 is future proofed, by making sure the network can grow with increased demand.  High Scandal 2 is a scam, a deception and nicely accelerates the runaway greenhouse effect for our ultimate downfall.

"an embarrassment to live in the W Midlands"

19 July 2019

Dear Tim & Co    (Tim Martin  Head of Governance  Clerk and Monitoring Officer)

e-mail subject field: 60 years of ecocidal behaviour to bring about Attenborough's dire warnings from the runaway greenhouse effect

Attenborough's "collapse of civilisations" and "extinction of much of the natural world" and "time is running out" warnings (Dec 2018).

Please ditch trams and, instead put the passenger trains and stations back on all 106 Kms - urgently!

Thanks for your decency in replying to my email.  Eventually, my reminders of what I think you all need to do will fall off - or continue to fall on deaf ears.  Your reply seems to indicate that some may be read and that is much appreciated!

It really is an embarrassment to live in the W Midlands.  Before I arrived, 51 years ago, the complete and extensive electric tram network had been completely wiped out.  Replaced by more diesel buses!  In the ensuing years, about 100 Kms of the railway network went the same way.  You started rebuilding the tram network instead of the train network and, in the process wiped out vital parts of the railway network for the trams to run on - permanently.  Astonishing incompetence!  And at the most colossal expense, too.  About ten times more expensive per kilometre than putting the trains and stations back.  SEE THE EVIDENCE:

Two principal railway stations have been demolished and rebuilt, with New Street demolished twice.  The second time, relegated to the basement of a fine new shopping centre that looks nothing like a railway station.  Not even a prominent name plate for visitors to know that there is a station as well!  Snow Hill was thought to be redundant - never again to be needed, I believe.  Demolished in the 1970s.  Your predecessors soon realised their little slip-up and rebuilt it but, to half its former size.  Unbelievable!  The Victorian station had eight platforms, the modern one only four and the fourth is now out of use since Metro trams now bypass the station to go straight to Grand Central.  But the business case justified the great expense by saying that Snow Hill would be linked to Grand Central.  The money was given on false pretences!

The authorities failed to build the much needed western approach tunnels for New Street when Brindleyplace was built in the 80s and 90s.  That was a serious omission.  Indeed, incompetence by the top people.  It continues the station being known as "one of the worst railway congestion bottlenecks in the UK" (Peter Plisner on 'Midlands Today').

The Bull Ring Shopping Centre has seen its second demolition and rebuilding.  Yet the new eastern approach railway tunnels for New Street were never put in after the demolition, in the 90s and 00s.  Another lost opportunity and a tragedy for Brum's railways.

The main library in Brum has been demolished and rebuilt twice.  Centenary Square demolished and rebuilt so many times I have lost count.  Does Chamberlain Square survive?

We once had a fine inner ring road of fast underpasses, flyovers and roundabouts of free-flowing traffic.  It did not last long before they decided to break "the concrete collar" by demolishing Colmore Circus, Masshouse Circus and St Martin's Circus.  In their place, we have yet more traffic lights, congestion and nose to tail traffic with all their attendant cocktail of poisonous, greenhouse gases right next to where people have to walk.  They call that progress.  Progress towards more greenhouse gases and the runaway greenhouse effect that means the END.

The Black Country and Brum also took passenger trains off 50 Kms of its railway network and thought that houses, shops and offices were meant to speed down railway lines - and some railway lines turned into roads.  Some of what was left is being turned into tram lines and test tracks, a trail of trees and the extension of the cycle-walkway in south Staffordshire, north of Walsall.

Manchester chose trams to replace buses and trains.  BBC Panorama,  'HS2: The Great Train Robbery' showed the disgraceful state of the railway network in northern England, centred on Manchester, with even slum-like Pacer commuter trains still used.  Money misspent.  Wrong priorities.

All the West Midlands authorities have constantly chosen the last six decades of never-ending building and demolition.  Deliberately destroying the tram network instead of modernising it; choosing trams that destroyed railway infrastructure instead of restoring trains and stations to the railway network.  All this is a very serious failure by our top VIPs in the city and region.  When are things going to be turned round to respond to the climate emergency instead of fueling it?

Please ditch trams and, instead put the passenger trains and stations back on all 106 Kms - urgently.  Get the buses turned into fareless, electric buses with 100% bus lanes and traffic lights turning green for them and red for the cars, whenever possible.  Use the nearly £2 billion you will save from abandoning Metro trams and Sprint diesel buses!  Get a sea change in social attitudes away from driving the car into city centres towards jumping on the bus, train or tram instead.  This way you free up the road network for essential vehicles.  My family is now using the bus or car/train to get into the city centre.  I cycle and have done for years.  Even using the bike for my social work in Brum for the last 15 to 20 years of my working life.  And still using the bike in my old age.

With best wishes

Tim

Dear Mr Weller,

Thank you for your email.

As I have pointed out before, there is a difference of opinion between you and the WMCA over the best way to proceed with these transport solutions however that does not  mean that we are acting in a way which is undemocratic or would lead to disciplinary action being taken.

In your email you mention an unresolved complaint. I am not aware of any specific complaint that is unresolved. Your correspondence with the Authority often raises the same or rhetorical points to which there is no specific “new” answer. If you could refer me to anything specific that has not received a response I would be happy to look into this.

Kind regards
